ELON MUSK’s BFR POSITIONS SPACEX TO LEAD THE RACE TO MARS
South African-born entrepreneur Elon Musk has revealed more details about his plans to make humans a multi-planet species with the announcement of SpaceX’s largest and most ambitious rocket yet, the BFR.
“You want to wake up in the morning and think the future is great, and that’s what being a spacefaring civilization is all about.” – Elon Musk
Watch Elon Musk’s presentation on the BFR and his plans for Mars.
Musk’s goal of sending cargo missions in 2022 and crewed missions in 2024 is years ahead of any other planned manned missions to Mars, including NASA’s 2030s goal.
The first mission is to find water and then the second is to build a propellant tank. This involves mining/finding/refining water and also extracting CO2 out of the Mars atmosphere to create methane for their raptor engines.
The reason for these dates is the Earth-Mars orbits are closest for launch every two years.
Mars isn’t the only destination for the BFR
Musk also highlights SpaceX’s reusable rocket could be a revolutionary step for transporting people faster than imagined across the globe – Anywhere on Earth in under an hour.
